When working with military families it is important to know that they sometimes face a unique set of financial challenges. Frequent moves and deployments are just two of the many factors that can cause those financial hardships. In addition to community resources, there are military organizations to whom you can refer families and whose purpose is to provide financial assistance to service members and their families. Each branch of the military has a specific relief or aid society.

How can these organizations help?

All relief or aid societies offer financial assistance in the form of no-interest loans, grants, or a combination of the two.  Help is available on a case-by-case basis for these typical situations:

  • Rent or Mortgage
  • Vehicle repair
  • Emergency travel
  • Utilities and Deposits
  • Funeral expenses
  • Food
  • Non-receipt of pay
  • Medical expenses
  • baby supplies and budgeting assistance for new or expecting parents.

Respite care is offered by the Air Force Aid Society  (download, see p. 11)  and Coast Guard Mutual Assistance (CGMA). CGMA also has other assistance for children with disabilities.

Cranial Helmets: Army Emergency Relief  and Coast Guard Mutual Assistance specifically offer coverage of this need.

If a family’s situation doesn’t fall into one of these categories, they are still urged to apply for help. In addition, a family or service member can apply for assistance to any of these aid societies, not only the one that helps their branch of the military.

Who qualifies for assistance?

Active duty or retired service members, their family members (with military ID card), surviving spouses, and some reservists and guardsman who are on active duty.
